Web-Based Concert Program
Oregon Repertory Singers (ORS) is a premier nonprofit choral organization founded in 1974, with a mission to create beauty, evoke emotion, inspire thought, and enrich our community through powerful choral performances and accessible music education. ORS is uniquely distinguished in the region as the only choral nonprofit offering equally robust youth and adult programs. We celebrate intergenerational singing, champion lifelong music education, and uphold the unifying power of music. This distinctive structure provides unparalleled opportunities for singers of all ages and delivers compelling performances that affirm the arts as a vital and inclusive cultural force.
Welcome
Glory of Christmas has become a cherished holiday tradition for our choir and our community, and we are truly honored to celebrate the season with you. This concert brings together friends, families, and neighbors to share in the joy and beauty of the holidays, and your presence keeps that tradition alive.
2025 has been an exciting year for ORS. While we deeply value our traditions, we also appreciate the flexibility our supporters give us to create unique and creative choral experiences. This year, the ORS Youth Choir launched a new Chamber Choir and Chamber Choir Festival, toured to Vancouver, and served over 200 singers across three locations, including hosting three summer camps for elementary-aged singers. We also welcomed composer Eriks Esenvalds to Portland and performed at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in October for Sing for the Cure, a first in our 52-year history.
These milestones—both new and cherished—continue to inspire our singers and our community, and your support makes them possible. Thank you for helping ensure that choral music remains a vibrant and treasured part of Portland’s cultural life.
Lauren Bryan
Executive Director
Oregon Repertory Singers is proud to join Lift Urban Portland for Glory of Christmas again this year to ensure every neighbor has access to nourishing food. LiftUP is a community-focused organization dedicated to serving low-income residents with a focus on reducing hunger, fueling food security, and fostering social connections. Together, we want to keep hope alive through programs like Preston’s Pantry, Delivered Groceries, onsite pantries, and Supper Club cooking nutrition classes, supporting more than 33,000 neighbors last year. Please support this important partnership by bringing canned soups, nut butters, or shelf-stable milk to your Glory of Christmas concert or making a financial contribution: every $10 donation provides 7 meals for members of the community.
Program Notes
For me, and I think for many of the singers on stage this weekend, The Glory of Christmas gives us a chance to pause and remember why we love making music together. It’s not just about the holidays—it’s about joy, connection, and the profound beauty that our voices can create together.
This year’s program is full of music that feels right for the season: pieces that shimmer with warmth, hope, and light. From the lush harmonies of Vaughan Williams and Brahms to the radiant simplicity of Howells and Biebl, these works remind us how deeply choral music can touch the soul.
I am thrilled that we have the incredible Jonas Nordwall returning as our guest organist, and especially excited to feature baritone Harry Baechtel, one of my closest friends and collaborators. And so many of you loved how beautifully Julian Casas played at our Esenvalds concert last Spring that I wanted to bring him back too.
As we close out this year and look toward the next, this concert is a celebration of what happens when people come together to create something beautiful. In a world that often feels divided, The Glory of Christmas is our reminder that harmony—real harmony—is still possible.

Text & Translations
Ein Deutches Requiem
Johannes Brahms
How lovely are thy dwelling places, O Lord of hosts!
My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee.
“Hodie Christus Natus Est”
Francis Poulenc
Today Christ is born: Today the Savior appeared.
Today on Earth the Angels sing, Archangels rejoice.
Today the righteous rejoice, saying:
Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia.
Having Witnessed A Wondrous Birth
Georgy Sviridov
Having witnessed a wondrous birth, let us be as strangers in this world, and turn our minds towards the heavens. For this the Most High God appeared on earth as a lowly man. Alleluia!
Having witnessed a wondrous birth, let us be as strangers in this world, and turn our minds towards the heavens. For this the Most High God descended to earth, that He might raise up to the heavens us who sing to Him: Alleluia!
Ave Maria
Franz Biebl
The angel of God visited Mary and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Refrain
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Mary said, “See the servant of the Lord.” May it happen to me according to your word.
Refrain
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Refrain
Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
The Oregon Repertory Singers adult choir involves over 110 singing members who are committed to presenting world-class music experiences accessible to all through programming of music from the newest generation of great composers alongside celebrated choral masterworks. ORS performs three major concerts each season. Dr. Morten Lauridsen, an internationally acclaimed composer, said, “This is the finest amateur large chorus I’ve heard anywhere in the world.” (2018)
Guest Artists
-
Jonas Nordwall is internationally renown as a unique virtuoso organist equally skilled in traditional classical and modern/popular schools of musical performance. For over a half century he has toured the world presenting concerts in churches, theatres and performing arts centers. He has performed in Japan, Europe, China and has made several tours of Australia. In 1999, he was both an adjudicator and recitalist for the Swiss International Organ Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This past September he was a guest artist at the Stockholm, Sweden International Organ Festival.
Nordwall has over 25 highly acclaimed recordings on a variety of labels. His recordings are frequently heard on the internationally syndicated radio show, “Pipedreams”. He is the only American organist to play a solo concert at the famed Sydney Town Hall for an audience over 2,000, also broadcast throughout the South Pacific by the Australian Broadcasting Company. His national television broadcasts include NBC’s “Today Show” and the Australian Broadcasting Company’s “Good Morning Australia.”
A Portland, Oregon native, Nordwall’s first musical studies began at age 4 on the accordion. Besides Portland teachers Joe Parente and Eileen Hagen, he tutored with the US premiere accordionists, Charles Magnante and Anthony Galla-Rini. At the age of 16, Nordwall performed for King Gustav Adolf during a tour of Sweden.
His studies expanded to piano and organ at age 10 with Portland teacher, Goldie Pos. Nordwall graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Portland, where his piano, organ and orchestration studies were with Arthur Hitchcock, formerly the chief pianist and organist for 20th Century Fox Studios from 1935 to 1950. Additional classical organ studies were with three of the twentieth century’s finest organists - the English/Canadian virtuoso Frederick Geoghegan, American virtuoso Richard Ellsasser, and Richard Purvis, the eminent organist-composer of San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral.
As a professional church musician since high school, he has served as the organist for Portland’s First United Methodist Church since 1971 and is presently the Artistic Director of Music. There he oversees one of the finest traditional music ministries in the United States. He has played for many international church gatherings, been an accompanist for the American Choral Directors Association conventions, and performed for several regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists.
As the organist for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra during the tenure of Maestro James DePriest, Nordwall was a featured soloist for several concerts and has recorded with the orchestra on the Delos label. Other orchestral appearances include the Vancouver, BC Symphony Orchestra, Portland Festival and Chamber Orchestras, Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver, Washington, Symphony Orchestra, San Jose Symphony Orchestra, Peter Britt Music Festival, Cascade Music Festival and the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (Bellingham, WA).
Nordwall is among the most respected theatre organists. He was fortunate to have America’s most respected theatre/studio organist, George Wright as a mentor and longtime friend. During college he had the rare opportunity to be the organist at both the Paramount and Oriental Theaters in Portland. For many years he was the Senior Staff Organist for the legendary Organ Grinder Corporation, which had large Wurlitzer pipe organs in lavish restaurant locations in Portland and Denver. In 1987 the American Theatre Organ Society named him Organist of the Year and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2022. He directs their Summer Youth Adventure, the ATOS version of the AGO Pipe Organ Encounter young organist program.
In addition to his musical performances, Nordwall has been a major influence in the later 20th century design and manufacturing of both pipe and electronic organs. He was associated with the Rodgers Organ Company for over 30 years and presently is an artist for the Allen organ Company. He introduced MIDI implementation to the organ world in 1987 at the National Association of Music Merchants Trade Show in Chicago.
Nordwall lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Nancy (a retired elementary school music teacher), their daughter Gennie (also an elementary school teacher), two grandsons and son Chris (the owner of Rose City Organ Builders and Pacific Northwest Allen representative) with his two daughters.
Reviews:
“A dashing performance” Felix Werder, Melbourne Australia Sun
“Nordwall is a grand master of the organ” and “ . . . if more organ concerts were as carefully programmed and excellently performed, the organ would again be at the fore-front of the musical public.” -Tom Delay, editor, the Theatre Organ Journal.
“An amazing musician” Robert Lindstrom, the Portland Oregonian.
“An intoxicating musician on the organ” San Jose Mercury News

Northern California native Dr. Harry Baechtel enjoys a wide-ranging career in the vocal arts. Praised for his “mellifluous” baritone, he recently joined microphilharmonic for a performance of the Schoenberg chamber orchestra arrangement of Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, receiving critical acclaim. “In a group of greatly trained musicians, Baechtel was the highlight of the evening” -Eugene Weekly. Dr. Baechtel has extensive experience in the standard operatic and oratorio repertoires as well as in modern musical productions. He created the lead role in Ethan Gans-Morse’ contemporary opera/oratorio The Canticle of the Black Madonna, and his operatic roles include Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Il Conte (Le nozze di Figaro), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), and Prince Tarquinius (The Rape of Lucretia), with organizations such as Boston Lyric Opera, Berkshire Opera, and Eugene Opera. He has performed as baritone soloist in a broad spectrum of the oratorio repertory including the Fauré Requiem, the Brahms Requiem, Finzi’s In terra pax, Handel’s Messiah, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Schubert’s Mass in G-major, Bach’s B-minor Mass, and Vaughan Williams’ Hodie and the Fantasia on Christmas Carols. Dr. Baechtel has a particular passion for performing art songs, and recently released a recording of chamber music and mélodies by Gabriel Fauré from the 1890s with pianist Michael Seregow and Sylvestris Quartet. An active recitalist, he performed at the Oregon Bach Festival with German Soprano Julia Sophie Wagner in a project that ties German Lieder together with dialogue into a dramatic tale called Princess Elise. Other projects include a CD release on the Acis label of unpublished Fanny Hensel Lieder with Chuck Dillard playing a middle 19th century J.B Streicher piano. In addition to his performing engagements Dr. Baechtel is an associate professor of voice at Portland State University.
