Introducing the ORS Youth Choir’s new
Jeri Haskins Artistic Director Chair
In honor of Jeri’s legacy, we are proud to announce a new title for the artistic leader of the ORS Youth Choir: the Jeri Haskins Artistic Director.
Since 1976, Jeri Haskins (alto) has served Oregon Repertory Singers with so much more than her singing voice; she has helped shape this organization. Jeri played a pivotal role in so many major organizational accomplishments: She was a key leader in founding the ORS Youth Choir, served on the hiring committee for Ethan Sperry 15 years ago, and served as co-chair of the Elevate Endowment Campaign committee…just to name a few accomplishments. Quite simply, ORS would not be what it is today without Jeri, her steady leadership and unwavering devotion.
Singer, Board Member, Committee Chair, and even Board President (at least twice!)—these are some of the titles Jeri Haskins has held in her 50 years with ORS. There is no challenge she wouldn’t face, no obstacle she wouldn’t take on in service of preserving and strengthening this organization.

It is an honor to have the Youth Choir Artistic Director title named after me. As a music teacher, I have always felt that the most important thing we can do is introduce young people to quality music… Every year we get better, and that makes me want to stay to find out what’s happening next.

A: My proudest moment was performing Joan Szymko’s Shadow and Light. I personally met with Joan to discuss the possibility of our choir performing the piece, and I was able to find a major donor to support the project. The performance wasn't just musically beautiful; its profound message left an incredible, lasting impact on both the singers and the audience.

A: Performing Rachmaninoff’s Vespers (All-Night Vigil) under the direction of Vladimir Minin was an absolutely incredible experience. Working under one of the finest conductors in the world truly teaches you what music demands from you as a performer.

A: One of the absolute biggest moments for the choir was signing a national recording contract with Koch. At the time, Richard Brown and Scott Eckelman were encouraging us to think bigger and take risks. That pivotal move officially put ORS on the national map of community choruses around the country.

A: Our tour to Spittal, Austria. It was our very first international competition, and we swept the contest! Gil invited me up to receive the prize money and the winners' plaque right alongside him. I was so incredibly proud to represent the choir.

A: The sheer size and reputation. We went from a member-run group of 24 singers to an organization of well over 100. Since Ethan Sperry took the podium, we’ve truly become the choir that most singers in the region dream of joining.

A: The heart of the choir. The one constant has always been the desire to sing music at the absolute highest level with people who love all genres of music.

A: As a music teacher, I have always felt that the most important thing we can do is introduce young people to quality music. With schools facing budget cuts and slashing arts programs, ORS Youth Choirs fill a vital gap in our community. I was on board from the very moment the idea was suggested, so having the position carry my name is a profound honor.

A: First and foremost, it's the opportunity to sing great music under a great conductor—every year we get better, and it makes me want to stay to see what happens next! Beyond that, this community of singers has become an essential part of my life, giving me the chance to connect with talented people of all ages.
