ORS 411!
Long-time ORS Artistic Director Gil Seeley is Retiring
Portland, OR - August 5, 2010--For more than three decades Gil Seeley has entertained and enlightened audiences in
Portland and around the world with his mastery of choral music as the artistic director and conductor of Oregon Repertory
Singers. This season, his 35th, will be his last; he is retiring after leading the organization since 1976.
"My years with Oregon Repertory Singers has been one long and wonderful musical adventure, and I wouldn't trade it for
anything." Gil reflected. "But the timing feels right in many ways although not easy. It's time for new adventures. One of my
dreams is to start a music festival in the Columbia Gorge and start a small choir in the region after my wife, Jane, and I move
to White Salmon next year."
Since joining ORS during its second year, Gil has conducted more than 1,100 singers who have performed hundreds of
concerts for audiences in Oregon, the region and around the world. His artistic vision and nuanced concert programming has
led ORS to be called Oregon's premier choral arts group, and he has led the group to international acclaim and awards. "Gil
has done more than just conduct and create magnificent concerts. He has educated us all about the joy of choral music and
the important role it plays in the arts and in our community. His vision, energy and command of music literature will be
missed," said ORS Board President, Carolyn Myers Lindberg.
The organization begins their search for a new artistic director this fall. "We are giving ourselves time to find the right person
who fits the qualities we seek in the next artistic director," replied Anne Barragar, Board Vice President and chair of the
search committee. "We have planned a two year transition. Gil will conduct this Season and next year he becomes our
Artistic Director Emeritus, and will share conducting responsibilities with candidates for the position. There is exciting talent
out there and we look forward to finding our new artistic leader."
Oregon Repertory Singers is locally and internationally recognized as an innovative choral ensemble, winning international
awards, and sharing the stage with groups from around the world, including the Boston Pops, the Oregon Symphony,
Chamber Music Northwest, Oregon Bach Festival, Baroque Orchestra, Oregon Ballet Theater, and many others. ORS recorded
seven albums, commissioned more than 20 original works and been highlighted on local and national broadcasts including
National Public Radio's Performance Today. "Gil's impact on choral music and the arts in this region is indescribable,"
Carolyn continued. "He has educated and nurtured a love of choral music among singers and audience members and
introduced many new and emerging international composers. All season we look forward to publically honoring his
incredible legacy and we invite Portland to join us in the celebration."
The Singer's 37th season begins in October with Classic Opera Choruses. In December the Singers present the traditional
holiday favorite, Glory of Christmas, featuring the premier performance of Wonder Tidings composed by Gil. The season
concludes in April 2011 with Bach & Bluegrass. For more information on Gil Seeley and Oregon Repertory Singers, including
